Here is a site that should help you. Don't ever put masking tape on your keys and then marker the notes in! That is a crutch that will be hard to break (not to mention if you leave the tape on too long, it'll stain the keys of your piano)What is An easy Way of Learning Piano Sheet Music?
Did you mean knowing which chord to play as stated in the book? Try getting some easy and slow songs first that you like hearing. For example, if you like oldies, try Over the Rainbow. Don't sweat using confusing chords. Try with basic keys (like if they write D on top of the bar), hit D with your left hand. And if it says C, hit C. Slowly learn this (I assume you're a beginner) and once the touch and melody gets into your head, you can try adding some notes on both hands and slowly the piece will be beautiful =) It takes time to play from piano books because especially contemporary pops have chords which require you to recognize them. And if you have hard time knowing the chords, get help from a professional or start learning some basic music (like getting a class just for fun playing) or get Dummies for Piano Playing =) Hope this helps ~
I'm sorry to say this, but it is only going to take pure dedicated and concentrated practice time. There is no ';easy'; way to learn how to sight read for any instrument. You're going to have to give up many, many, many hours of practice time. This is the ONLY way to learn how to read sheet music.

DO NOT PUT TAPE ON YOUR KEYS! THAT IS THE LAST THING YOU SHOULD DO. Just start off with 30 minutes a day, then move up to 45 minutes a day until you get to about 2-3 hours a day if you are serious about learning how to read sheet music. Good luck!
